Japanese Doll Display for Hinamatsuri

Japanese dolls on display for Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri takes place on March 03, 2022. Hinamatsuri is also called the Japanese Doll Festival or Girls' Day. Platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period. These platforms range in size from very small, 1-2 platform souvenir types, to extremely elaborate ones with multiple platforms. Some family displays represent many family generations because the displays are passed on.

Families usually start displaying the dolls in February. Superstition says that if the displays are not taken down immediately after the festival, it could mean a late marriage for the daughter(s).  Most displays are taken down the day after the festival.
